Why Did My Jeep PCM Fail? And How Can I Fix My Jeep PCM?
Computers are extremely powerful and finicky devices. Even the Jeep PCM. They can control extremely complex electronic devices of every kind. It’s ironic that a computer could literally run a mechanized coffee factory and then fail if a cup of java juice spilled on it; but, alas, that’s the way it is.
The computers in our cars have big jobs, but they too are susceptible to dangers that seem innocuous for such capable technology. The engine control module manages your vehicle’s systems by monitoring, regulating and adjusting them as necessary. In a Jeep, this part is called the PCM. The Jeep PCM behaves similarly to your home computer which can play movies, store documents and access the internet; even while it tracks which programs are the most demanding, and gives them the bump they need. It’s an impressive machine
Despite its capabilities, however, the PCM can still break down in rare instances. This is because it’s the PCM that generally raises the red flag when things are going wrong. It can be difficult to identify that the computer itself is causing problems. If you and your mechanic have troubleshot the rest of the vehicle, typically deduction will allow you to comfortably ascertain that the ECM is the issue.
So what happened? Why did the computer fail? Well, there are lots of possible reasons, including:
– Corrosion to the essential parts
– Moisture inside the device
– Failure of a magnet-like coil called the solenoid
– Dead battery cells, or
– An electric short caused by grounding, lightning, or a battery jump
Unfortunately, due to the complexity of the engine control module, repair is rarely an option. Few mechanics are even equipped to handle such a procedure and therefore replacement is typically the best option. Luckily, proper module care is nearly identical to proper car care, overall. Keeping it clean, taking it to get a check out regularly and avoiding unnecessary electrical exposure will go a long way toward keep your Jeep PCM operable.
